I was on my … I was on my honeymoon during this Boston. I and the little lady watched it on Hereford Street. I actually saw Alberto Salazar turn around and look for Beardsley who was just about 15 yards behind him.
I dont know about … I dont know about that haha Alberto is the one getting carried around while Dick is walking around unassisted. Dick also went for a run the next day and because Alberto didn’t drink nearly enough water during the race he had to recieve special treatment after the race. I’m not tryin to be a ass… just providing some background info. which i learned from the book “Duel in the Sun”
It never is like … It never is like that. Each runner runs his/her own race. Beardsley had always the choice to fold back and save some energy for the end, try to loose Salazar a mile before and countless other strategies. Together, they made the race.
I heard Beardsley … I heard Beardsley speak last night to my running group, it was the best talk I have ever heard in my life. To now see this video, only adds to the drama of the story that he shared with us about all the turmoil that was going on in his head during the last 2 miles. Truly amazing.
I think both Dick … I think both Dick and Albeto are true gentleman of the sport. That bit at the end when Salazar holds up Beardsley’s hand, He’s the man! Yea inspirational for someone in recovery. Running needs more people like these two!
Boston’s finest … Boston’s finest screwed up the race. The cops and their motorcycles…my gawd….I ran Boston 1983 (2:14) and apparently cops had learned that they are not in the race. Did see a one…….
Ordinarily, I would … Ordinarily, I would agree it is chickenshit to let someone else lead the whole way. However, I read the book, “Duel in the Sun”, and Beardsley tried to stay ahead of Salazar’s shadow the whole race. Salazar was also having hamstring pain, so he was just hanging on and gutting it out.
