The Advanced Lights Out Management system on the Sun Fire T2000 server is its own operating system, which acts independent of the Solaris operating environment at a hardware level, where temperature and power sensors, events, and detailed manufacturer information can be looked up. Has its own user database and listens on the dedicated rj-45 management port after configuration via a rs232-db9 cable has set the interface up. Think BIOS/CMOS, then think of the most complex server operating system, Solaris, and then think the internet and the possibility of managing and maintaining the whole system from anywhere, vpn or through a ssh tunnel if you like. It’s just telnet, so it works with any os that supports tcp/ip and serial access.

Not necessarily …
Not necessarily outdated with regards to SPARC equipment since the only major competitor licensing the chip design is Fujitsu PrimePower, which is massive in scale compared to the more efficient product line Sun has these days. Sun still produces systems with double digit number of sockets of course. They produce one of the best quality products you’re going to find, even their x64 boxes are quite solid. They have about 40% dependence on US market, but don’t outsource as much as HP or Dell.

Mate,
If you ever want some stuff, give me a call (USA Freecall) 1800-219-1195 extension 201. I’d be happy to help a fellow techie out. We’re always giving away old stock (in japan after a year its considered obsolete), and I’m looking for somewhere to unload my junk.
Cheers,
Alex

It was basically …
It was basically the help screen for the Advanced Lights Out Management (ALOM) which is basically BIOS which you telnet into, so you can run headless. I was simply powering it on. The ALOM is always on, when power is attached, you use a modified serial cable to get into it.
