Will Sun Solaris replace Linux as a server os in future?

Posted by admin on May 31st, 2010 and filed under sun server | 2 Comments »

As far as I know, Solaris has been around longer than Linux. It is being used in many servers around the world. Maybe not as much as Linux but used nevertheless. Both OS’s are based on Unix. The only advantage of Linux is that most versions of it are free. Solaris isn’t. For large corporate setups, a paid OS means getting the much needed support straight from the people who made it. That is something amiss with those who use the free versions of Linux. That is why we experience lots of internet troubles at times from Linux servers that were poorly setup by people who don’t know how to.

Can I plug a Sun V100 straight into a normal power point?

Posted by admin on May 20th, 2010 and filed under sun server | 1 Comment »

I have been given a server that I wish to play with to learn how to set them up and use unix etc. At work they have special power systems. If I just plug it into a normal household power point will I risk damaging the server or anything?

If it has the same power requirements as your domestic power point can provide, it should work.

Most commercial power systems have the same domestic voltages as your home, but isolate the earth terminal from the building structure, except at the electric service entrance.

is there any alternative to crontab on Solaris?

Posted by admin on May 13th, 2010 and filed under sun server | 1 Comment »

I have a very complex crontab file(few hundred entries).I was wondering if there is any alternative or comercial product to use instead with a better interface.I am working on a Sun server with Solaris 2.5 installed

I suppose you could create a daemon made up of scripts using the at command to kick things off at a specific time…but that’s not what you’re asking I know.

Have you googled for an answer?

Also, check:

http://www.sourceforge.net

There you will find 1000s of apps, all free under the GPL licensing agreement. I bet you’ll find something there.

Good luck!
